A guide to Moroccan Darija

Speak it like you actually live here.

For travelers heading to Morocco, partners of Moroccans navigating dinner-table conversation, and the diaspora finally learning to speak with family. The way locals actually do, not the way textbooks teach.

The method

I don't teach phrases. I teach you.

I.

First call: who are you?

We talk about your goals, your life, and how you actually learn. Before any lesson starts.

II.

A curriculum, made for you.

Built around what excites you. Family, travel, cooking, football, that's where we start.

III.

Lessons that fit your life.

Online, paced to you, no 12-week marathon. We adjust as you grow.

Salma — Moroccan Arabic for Tourists

The phrasebook

A note from Salma

I'm Salma. Native speaker, real teacher, here when you're ready.

I've been teaching Darija online for the past 18 months, with students from 12+ countries. Most start as complete beginners. Many have a Moroccan partner, a Moroccan parent, or a trip planned. A few just love the language.

What I've learned: the people who actually keep going are the ones who are excited. Not the ones with the strictest schedule. So that's what I build my lessons around. Your life, your goals, your reasons, then a curriculum that fits.

If that sounds like the right way for you to learn, the free 15-minute intro is the place to start.

Salma.

Questions

Things people ask before booking.

01.Is Darija the same as Arabic?+

No. Darija is the spoken Moroccan dialect. You can read Modern Standard Arabic and still not understand Darija. Most students start from zero, that's fine.

02.Do I need to learn the Arabic alphabet?+

Not unless you want to. The phrasebook and lessons use Latin transliteration so you can read everything from day one. Arabic script is included in the phrasebook for reference.

03.What if I'm a complete beginner?+

Most of my students are. We start with whatever's exciting to you. Family, travel, food, music. Build from there.

04.How long does it take to actually speak?+

Depends on your goal. Most students hold a basic conversation after 6 to 10 lessons. Survival phrases for a trip can be ready in 2 to 3.

05.What if the intro call isn't a fit?+

No pressure to book lessons after. The 15 minutes is genuinely free. You'll leave with at least three phrases worth using.
